Huacachina, Peru is a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of the Peruvian desert, just a short drive from the city of Ica. This little oasis is located about 5 hours south of Lima, the capital of Peru, making it an easy (and totally worth it) detour from the big city.

Surrounded by towering sand dunes, the small lagoon at the center of Huacachina is where it gets its nickname, “The Oasis.” It’s a place where nature meets adventure, and the best part? It’s a perfect base for exploring the nearby desert landscapes, taking on some epic sandboarding, or cruising the dunes in a high-speed dune buggy. It was like a rollercoaster, no joke. I was actually screaming in the best way possible. I was NOT prepared. But I LOVED it!

How do I get to huacachina, Peru?

Getting to Huacachina, Peru is easier than you might think—and trust me, it’s worth every minute of the journey. If you’re already in Lima or another major Peruvian city, the easiest and most hassle-free way to get to this desert oasis is by hopping on a Peru Hop bus.

Peru Hop is hands down the best way to travel through Peru. They make it so easy, and the buses are designed with backpackers in mind. They’re the only bus company that actually takes you all the way into Huacachina in about 4-5 hours. Most other buses drop you off in Ica. From there, it’s just a short taxi ride to the oasis.

The best part? The Peru Hop buses are flexible, so you can stop at all the epic spots along the way, including Paracas and the Ballestas Islands (more on that below). I ended up booking a 2-day tour that brought me down to Huacachina, stopping at the Ballesatas Islands along the way, with a next-day Lima return.

Can you swim at Huacachina, Peru?

The short answer? Yep! You can swim in the lagoon, but here’s the deal: it’s not exactly a tropical beach vibe. The lagoon is beautiful, but it’s not the type of spot for long beach days or lounging in the sun.

That said, taking a quick dip in the lagoon is a refreshing way to cool off after a day of sandboarding or dune buggying. Just keep in mind that the water can get a bit murky around the edges, and it’s not the most pristine swimming experience compared to a pool or ocean. Many of the hotels in Huacachina have their own pools–I preferred those!

If swimming's your main thing, I'd recommend saving your beach vibes for another spot in Peru. For adventure and stunning views? Huacachina’s where it’s at.

Is Huacachina Oasis man-made?

Huacachina is actually a natural oasis, but with a little human flair added over time. The lagoon at the heart of Huacachina was formed by underground aquifers, making it a natural water source in the middle of the desert. But, as you can imagine, being surrounded by massive sand dunes means that over the years, humans have built up the area to make it what it is today.

So, while the oasis itself is 100% natural, the charming little village that surrounds it is very much a product of human hands. But honestly, that just adds to the magic of the place.

What is Sandboarding and Why You Need to Try it

You can’t go to Huacachina and not sandboard. I mean, you can. But like, why not at least give it a try, right? It’s the adventure of choice out there, and you’ll see evidence of it around every corner. Snowboards and skis line the sidewalk with street art of shredders sprinkled in between.

1. What’s Sandboarding?

It’s exactly what it sounds like: surfing or snowboarding... on sand. That means you get to zoom down steep, golden hills, catching air, feeling the rush, and laughing your face off as you wipe out (don’t worry, it happens to the best of us). Sounds like a wild time? That’s because it is.

There are two main ways to do it:

Standing: Strap in, find your balance, and ride the waves of sand like you're on a snowboard.
Lie down: If you book a tour, they’ll have belly boards for you to try. These also go SO much faster than the snowboards or skis–you’ll find yourself flying down these dunes face first, maybe even catching a little air.

2. How to Sandboard in Huacachina

Here’s the lowdown: if you’ve snowboarded or surfed before, you’ll be feeling right at home. Mostly. Not gonna lie, it was a tough adjustment. Sand is heavy so everything happens slower. You also need to wax your board after every single run. Every one. Trust me. Or you’ll be stuck standing in the middle of the dune and sad.

If you’ve never done either, don’t worry, it’s not hard! And falling on sand isn’t bad. Embrace it.

When you're on the board, you want to keep low, lean forward, and let the sand take you for a ride. The trick is to lean into it and carve your way down those giant dunes.

Pro Tip: Start small. The dunes around Huacachina can be massive, so it’s best to get the feel for it on a smaller hill before heading to the big ones. No shame in starting slow—you’ll be flying soon enough!

3. Where to Sandboard in Huacachina

The real magic of sandboarding is the dunes themselves. Huacachina is surrounded by some of the highest, most insane sand dunes in all of Peru, and trust me, they’re just begging to be ridden.

Most people book a dune buggy tour to get to the best spots. This is the route I took and I’m SO happy I did. I actually booked it through my Peru Hop 2-day tour, but there are plenty of places in Huacachina you can book from directly, including your hostel! These buggies are an absolute blast, tearing across the desert at high speed (I was not expecting them to be THAT fast!) and climbing the giant dunes, giving you epic views of the oasis below. Think rollercoaster status but on sand. We were catapolted over blind ledges, caught air, and felt like we were going to flip (don’t worry, we never did). It was AWESOME.

Dune buggy and sandboarding tours:

The best times to go? Early mornings or late afternoons. Why? Because the desert sun gets hot, and the light during sunrise and sunset makes everything look like it's straight out of a postcard. Also, cooler temps = more energy for sandboarding. All of the tours happen at sunset!

Stay hydrated: The desert heat can catch you off guard. Drink water before, during, and after your ride to keep your energy up.

Cozy rooms with killer views of the dunes, plus a nice pool where you can cool off after all those adrenaline-pumping activities.

2. Banana’s Adventure Hostel

This was my home for the night! Banana’s Adventure Hostel is a chilled-out gem with a seriously laid-back vibe. Perfect for meeting fellow travelers at the bar and restaurant, cooling off in the pool, and swapping stories about your day’s dune buggy madness. Plus, they organize sandboarding tours, dune buggy rides, and all the fun desert adventures you’ll want to get into. Pro tip: The sunset views from the rooftop are unreal.

3. Casa de Arena

For a bit of luxury in the desert, Casa de Arena is where it’s at. With a stylish, modern feel, with clean lines and a minimalist design, this boutique hotel offers sleek rooms, an incredible outdoor pool, and panoramic views of the dunes.

5. Desert Nights Eco Camp

We love an eco-friendly option! Desert Nights Eco Camp is the perfect mix of comfort and sustainability, offering glamping-style tents with all the amenities you need, plus a gorgeous pool to kick back by.

6. Hostel Sand and Lake

Budget-friendly? Check. Relaxed vibe? Check. Hostel Sand and Lake offers a no-frills, yet comfortable stay for travelers who want to experience Huacachina without breaking the bank. The beds are comfy, the location is perfect (just a short walk from the oasis), and there’s a chill common area to hang out with new friends. Plus, the hostel organizes all kinds of tours, so if you want to book your next desert adventure on the spot, you can easily make it happen here.

7. Hotel Mossone

For a touch of Peruvian history with your desert stay, Hotel Mossone is a classic. This historic hotel has been around for decades and offers a more traditional, upscale experience. Think elegant rooms, lush gardens, and stunning views of the oasis. It’s a bit on the pricier side, but if you want to treat yourself to a little luxury with that desert oasis feel, this place will make you feel like royalty. Bonus: The restaurant here is delicious, so make sure to grab a bite while you’re staying.

Packing List

Packing for an epic desert adventure in Huacachina, Peru? Here’s what you’ll need:

Light, breathable clothing for during the day: It’s toasty as all get out during the day so you’ll want some flowy clothes if you’re out and about! I brought a flowy skirt and a tee, which kept me cool during my Pisco tasting tour.
Durable clothes for your sandboarding tour: This tour is rugged. You’re going to be whipping around in a dune buggy, flying down sand dunes, and you’re gonna find sand where the sun don’t shine. These tours happen in the late afternoon/early evening to avoid the heat, but it’s still warm. I opted for stretchy jean shorts and a tight tee. I still got sand everywhere, butttt I was happy with my choice!

Shoes: I wore my Tevas most of this trip, with the exception of the snowboarding boots they give you when you rent a board.
Sunscreen & a hat: Desert sun is intense—protect your skin! I bring Kinfield wherever I go!
Sunglasses: You’re in the desert–it’s bright! Don’t forget your sunnies! They also help with blowing sand too. I just wore my cheap Amazon sunglasses on this trip (in case I lost them to the desert).
Camera: DUH! Don’t forget your camera! I had my Sony a7r III with my 24-70mm GMII lens and Tamron 70-300mm lens.
Bandana or scarf: This helped keep all that blowing sand out of my mouth! You can easily pick one up from the street vendors in Huacachina.
Water: A reusable water bottle is a must in the desert heat.
